So the Manananggal is a creation of the Spaniards who colonized the Philippines. When the Spaniards came they couldn’t understand why women were seen as equals and REVERED for their ability to give life (via birth). So they made her into a monster that takes away life as part of the project of colonial patriarchy Women in precolonial Philippines were seen as creators, healers, and leaders!
So I was inspired to create this doll as a way of reclaiming our power. I didn’t know about The MANANANGGAL until a friend told me about the story behind it! There are so many stories told about women turning them into something bad or evil that need to be told as it originally truth. Only they can tell herstory! Only 10 will be made. The body separates at torso. Both skirts come off and wings can detach as well.
